What to Expect
You’ve contacted MTA, now what?
Take a deep breath...you did it!
We will respond within 2 business days. When we respond, we will ask some questions in order to determine if we are the best fit for your needs. Some folks like to have a consultation call in order to help determine fit, please let us know if that’s what you prefer.
If it is a good fit, your therapist will proceed with scheduling your first appointment and getting you set up on our client portal.
The First Session
All initial appointments are 60-75 minutes and are aimed at getting to know you and understanding how therapy may help. In this session your therapist will review some boring paperwork (as we like to call it) and start exploring what brings you to therapy. There is also space to ask any questions you have. After talking a bit and completing an assessment, your therapist will provide a recommendation for appropriate therapeutic treatment. You will collaborate with them to determine frequency of sessions and your therapeutic goals. This is a lot to do in one sitting, so this may take a couple sessions.
The first session can be really nerve racking & anxiety inducing for many folks. We understand that starting therapy, meeting someone new, and sharing some deep vulnerabilities can be really scary. We believe you can do scary things! But we also believe in grounding and co-regulation, so feel free to tell us what you're feeling and we can navigate it together.
Future Sessions
Once you've created therapeutic goals with your therapist, the rest of sessions focus on working towards those goals. This can look like slowing down in order to explore the different parts of your mind that play a role in your life, identifying patterns, learning/implementing new skills, tending to your inner child/teen/younger self, and more.
The therapy space is always focused on you, which means that as your needs and goals change, so does the therapy space. Your therapist will be aware of these changes and will sometimes check on how you think progress is going. As you get to a place where you are meeting all of your goals, your therapist will collaborate with you on how to proceed with discontinuing therapy. MTA frequently recommends a step-down approach where sessions are tapered (weekly-biweekly-monthly) down as you progress.
